There has been an incredibly positive response from parents and the community to our school since its inception in 1997.

Statistics from a series of articles that appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2005 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of “Brown vs. Board of Education” indicate that:

  • Our state ranks lowest in the entire nation in the percentage of black 8th graders whose performance was rated “below basic” in reading and math;
  • Our state has the highest achievement gap between black and white students in the U.S.;
  • Our state has the highest incarceration rates in the nation for black males; and
  • Our state has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation for black females.

Solutions to these problems are complex, but it is certain that education provides a path out of poverty. The chances for academic success improve immensely with early educational achievement. The children at Milwaukee College Prep (99% black, 66% from single parent homes and 75% low-income) have a very slim chance of success, based on statistical probabilities. Despite the fact that the school accepts students through a blind admissions policy, very positive in roads have been made with students. Milwaukee College Prep simply proves that all children can learn and they can be successful. The work is hard, but the rewards are incredible.

If this describes you …

  • You get frustrated by people who make excuses for why urban students “can’t achieve.”
  • You want to work in a professional environment in which teachers and the craft of teaching are highly valued.
  • You are relentless in helping your students climb the mountain to college.
  • Your students have shown dramatic student achievement gains.
  • Your classroom is characterized by order, structure, kindness, and academic rigor.
  • You want to work with others who share your passion and work ethic - others who will join you in the important task of closing the achievement gap.
